Upon reaching the age of eighty-five, Mom reflected on her life with a renewed sense of urgency, realizing that time was passing more swiftly than she had anticipated. Eager to seek out adventure before it slipped away, she made the courageous choice to visit her son Kevin in Texas. Since she was no longer able to drive, my sister Pam and I took on the role of her chauffeurs.

I was tasked with organizing our road trip to Texas and opted to use the Wanderlog app, which greatly simplified the process. Many evenings were spent exploring the app’s user-friendly features, plotting our route, and uncovering a multitude of hidden treasures along the way. From quaint small towns and unusual roadside sights to picturesque parks perfect for lunch breaks, every possible stop added excitement to our journey. The app’s collaborative tools enabled me to share the itinerary with Mom and Pam, allowing their feedback and adjustments so that everyone could enjoy their favorite destinations. The extensive planning transformed what might have been a convoluted drive into a thoughtfully designed adventure filled with sightseeing and unforgettable memories, laying the groundwork for an exceptional road trip experience.

The day before our eagerly awaited road trip began, Mom and Pam drove three hours from Sioux Falls to Omaha to stay at my place, creating the ideal atmosphere for the adventure that awaited us. Their arrival turned my home into a vibrant center of excitement and preparation, as the eagerness for the upcoming journey filled the air. Once they got to Omaha, we spent the evening reconnecting, organizing our essentials, and reviewing the stops along our route. Coming a day early not only brought them physically closer but also sparked a sense of unity, making the upcoming trip feel even more meaningful.

At dawn the following morning, gentle morning light streamed through the windows while we eagerly packed the car – crammed with clothes, supplies, and a wheelchair for Mom. Amid the busy activity, we carefully settled Mom into the back seat, arranging her comfortably alongside her favorite snacks and a cooler stocked with lunch items. The engine started, and I carefully reversed the car – loaded with our equipment and an atmosphere of shared anticipation – out of the driveway to commence our journey.

We waved goodbye to my family as we slipped away on Corby Circle. The sky was adorned with gentle shades of pink and orange from the rising sun, bathing the horizon in a golden glow that beautifully set the scene for the beginning of our journey. Departing from Omaha, we traveled along the picturesque rural Highway 75, our anticipation growing with every mile of our two-day excursion to Meadowlake. Along the way, we chatted, shared treats, and admired the rolling countryside passing by, already sensing that this day would mark an unforgettable start to our first road trip together, just the three of us.

Our first stop on the journey was the stunning Ted Ensley Gardens, nestled near Topeka, Kansas, where we enjoyed a charming picnic on the serene western edge of Lake Shawnee. We chose an ideal spot under the sprawling branches of an oak tree, where the soft rustling of leaves intertwined with the gentle lapping of water along the shoreline. Surrounded by vibrant blossoms and the lake’s peaceful atmosphere, we enjoyed our meal while capturing photos of a feisty squirrel attempting to snatch some of our food. The calm environment, enriched by birdsong and occasional ripples on the lake’s surface, transformed our lunch into a refreshing pause that set a magical mood for the day ahead.

Originally, I had planned the Great Plains Nature Center as our next stop, keen on experiencing various ecosystems and observing native wildlife in their habitats. However, the intense heat quickly diminished our enthusiasm for hiking along the sun-drenched trails. Instead, we took shelter at a nearby shaded rest area where we could cool off with cold beverages and rest away from the relentless sun. Though not part of our initial itinerary, this unplanned stop allowed us to pause, appreciate simple moments – the shaded road, locals taking brief breaks, and a raised walkway across the street – before we piled into the car for the final segment of that day’s trip.

Following a lengthy day on the road, we arrived at our Oklahoma City hotel earlier than anticipated, allowing us plenty of time to relax and explore its amenities. While Mom chose to unwind in the cozy confines of our room, Pam and I were drawn to the inviting, cool waters of the hotel's pool. We enjoyed swimming laps and playful splashing, feeling refreshed and energized after the many hours spent sitting in the car. The pool area was completely deserted, so we enjoyed a peacefully quiet private swim. This was an ideal way to rejuvenate ourselves in preparation for tomorrow's adventure.

In the morning, we eagerly gathered in the hotel’s dining room to partake in a complimentary breakfast that perfectly fueled our excitement for the day’s plans. The assortment included fresh waffles, succulent fruits, fluffy scrambled eggs, and crispy bacon, all complemented by aromatic coffee. Each delicious bite seemed to boost our energy and enthusiasm as we discussed the distinctive treasures and charming decorations awaiting us at Magnolia Market. Fully satisfied and in high spirits, we set out towards this renowned shopping spot, eager to experience the creative vibe that has made Magnolia Market one of Texas’s most cherished destinations.

The three of us were filled with anticipation for our imminent trip to Magnolia Market, fueled by the countless hours we spent watching Chip and Joanna Gaines transform dilapidated houses into stunning dream residences on Fixer Upper. Their unique blend of rustic charm and modern elegance made us eager to dive into the market and explore the thoughtfully curated collection of home décor, vintage treasures, and handmade goods that reflect their signature style. Beyond shopping, we were excited to soak up the vibrant atmosphere of Waco, Texas, meet others who share our admiration, and imagine ways to bring a touch of the Gaines’ magic into our own living spaces. This journey was more than just a simple visit; it was an opportunity to experience firsthand a place we had all seen being lovingly restored.

Upon arriving at the silos, an electric sense of anticipation fills the air as we approach the quaint, rustic storefront situated in the heart of Waco. After helping Mom out of the car and setting up her wheelchair – her excitement evident – we stroll together down the short street to wander through the bustling marketplace. The aroma of freshly baked goods from the Silos Baking Company mingles with the lively conversations of visitors and the gentle strains of rustic country tunes nearby. Within the towering silo, each aisle reveals a thoughtfully arranged selection of home décor, handmade crafts, and cozy spots brimming with souvenirs. Knowing Mom can comfortably explore every corner in her wheelchair adds an extra layer of joy to this experience, as we delight in uncovering one-of-a-kind treasures and making cherished memories at this iconic location.

Before leaving the market, Mom couldn’t resist purchasing a beautiful, artisanal jar – perfect for adding a rustic yet elegant touch to her kitchen. I was thrilled to get my hands on a cookbook by Joanna Gaines herself, eager to try her warm, comforting recipes that blend simple ingredients with heartfelt Southern charm. Meanwhile, Pam found the coziest sweatshirt, soft and stylish, ideal for chilly mornings or relaxed weekends. Happy with our purchases, we returned to the car for a quick picnic lunch before continuing on our last hours of travel to Meadowlakes.

After a long drive along Texas’ winding back roads beneath the wide open sky, we finally arrived at Kevin’s house outside of Austin. The trip itself had been a rich experience, unfolding across vast fields dotted with windmills, weathered fences, and the gnarled live oak trees that lined the backroads. Turning into Kevin’s tranquil, tree-lined street in Meadowlakes, I admired the serene neighborhood. Kevin and Brenda welcomed us warmly, their smiles and open arms inviting us into their contemporary home infused with rustic Texan charm. After hours on the road, this moment marked both the conclusion of our journey and the start of an unforgettable visit filled with heartfelt conversations, laughter, and the renowned hospitality of Texas.

Pam stayed in the main house, which featured lovely guest rooms in a separate wing, while my mother and I took refuge in the cozy casita – their charming little guest house that felt like a second home. Each detail in the casita was meticulously thought out, providing every convenience imaginable – from a fully stocked kitchen to a soft, inviting bed that guaranteed restful sleep. Our favorite place quickly became the quaint patio off the living room, where we spent serene evenings talking and enjoying the tranquil atmosphere. This delightful blend of comfort and character made our stay genuinely memorable, offering the perfect sanctuary for relaxation and precious mother-daughter moments.

Ericka, our niece, had traveled all the way from Tennessee, and I deeply valued the moments we spent reconnecting. We nestled into the inviting living room, engaging in sincere conversations about her life – discussing everything from the hurdles she faces at work to the playful antics of her dog. Listening to her share stories about her boyfriend, their escapades, and their treasured memories made me feel significantly closer to her despite the physical miles between us. This time together served as a beautiful reminder of how quickly life can evolve and how enduring family ties consistently provide happiness and comfort. Such occasions, brimming with laughter and shared anecdotes, left me thankful for our relationship and eager for our next reunion.

Our nephew Clark, accompanied by his wife and their two young daughters, were the reason for this family gathering. This was their last weekend in Texas before relocating to Seattle. The air buzzed with excitement as they paused their hectic packing schedule to enjoy family time. Clark and his wife spoke about his new employment, searching for suitable schools for their children, and the stress of finding a rental home. Their daughters, wide-eyed and inquisitive, showed clear apprehension about attending unfamiliar schools and making new friends. Despite the inevitable upheaval that comes with moving, their visit was a touching reminder of how vital family connections are during major life changes.

During our stay, my brother’s home was filled with happiness and fun, effortlessly blending periods of calm with exciting adventures. Some members of the group spent hours deeply involved in Trash, a lively card game that had everyone devising tactics and cheering one another on, with the spirited competition highlighting both our clever plays and funniest moments. Meanwhile, others chose to relax on the patio, nestled in comfortable seats beneath the shaded roof, enjoying cool drinks and engaging conversations that allowed us to reconnect with each other’s lives. One afternoon, we headed to the bowling alley, where every strike and gutter ball elicited cheers and laughter, transforming the friendly competition into an uproarious good time. The next day was dedicated to exploring the downtown area, strolling through picturesque streets dotted with cozy cafés and unique shops, as we made treasured memories amid the vibrant atmosphere and pleasant company. This perfect blend of gaming, chatting, and exploring reminded us of the priceless value of family time.

Throughout our stay in Texas’ Hill Country, persistent rainfall poured down for several hours without pause, transforming the usually tranquil Guadalupe River into a raging flood that breached its banks and submerged the surrounding land. The normally serene river swelled quickly, inundating trails, roads, and nearby communities, forcing both locals and tourists to seek refuge on higher ground. Safely sheltered in Kevin’s home, we watched in shock as local news stations broadcasted reports of children being swept away by a sudden flash flood at Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp. This flooding event brought widespread destruction across Central Texas, becoming one of the deadliest flash flood incidents in the region's history, claiming at least 138 lives. Thankfully, Meadowlakes only suffered minor impacts, with temporary road flooding and a small number of homes affected by water. Our sole disruption was having to extend our stay by a day while waiting for the floodwaters to recede.

As the floodwaters eventually began to subside and the skies cleared to reveal a hopeful dawn, a profound sense of gratitude settled over us. The shared experience of weathering the storm together deepened our bonds, reminding us of the strength found in family and community during times of crisis. When the roads reopened, it was with a bittersweet feeling that we prepared to depart, carrying with us not only the warmth of Kevin and Brenda’s hospitality but also heartfelt memories forged amid laughter, challenges, and heartfelt connections. As we said our goodbyes, promises of future visits lingered in the air – assurances that no matter where life leads us, these moments in Texas’ Hill Country would forever be a cherished chapter in our family’s story.
