Annual egg drop
Annual egg drop

Every year, our church congregation looks forward to the much-anticipated retreat at the scenic Platte River State Park—a wonderful chance to unwind, bond, and rejuvenate away from the busy pace of everyday life. We usually arrive on Friday evening after finishing work, with the drive itself gently shifting our mindset towards tranquility as the urban landscape gradually gives way to the expansive view of the river and the soothing sounds of nature. Upon reaching the park, we gather at Mallot Lodge to collect our cabin keys and reconnect with fellow church members. This retreat has grown into a beloved tradition that strengthens the connections within our church community, forging lasting memories far beyond the weekend.

That first night at Mallot Lodge buzzes with energy as church families convene, each bringing a variety of dishes to contribute to the communal potluck dinner. The room fills with the enticing scents of homemade casseroles, fresh salads, and delectable desserts—each dish showcasing the distinctive culinary heritage of the families present. The cozy dining hall hums with laughter and lively conversations as everyone shares the diverse meal around large tables, fostering a warm and authentic sense of togetherness. Following dinner, we receive the keys to our inviting cabins, nestled peacefully amid the park’s serene landscape, where rustic ambiance meets modern amenities. Unwinding on screened porches or gathering around crackling fires between cabins, we prepare for a weekend devoted to relaxation, fellowship, and cherished moments as a church family.

Saturday morning greets us with crisp air as we embark on an invigorating hike across the gentle valley separating the cabins from the lodge. Our footsteps create a soft crunch on fallen leaves as the sounds of morning wildlife accompany us along a trail meandering through verdant foliage, where patches of sunlight weave through the trees, casting a peaceful mosaic of light and shadow. Upon arriving at the lodge, the inviting aromas of freshly brewed coffee and sizzling bacon welcome us into a cozy communal space where our church family awaits. The atmosphere brims with camaraderie as we share laughter, stories, and hearty breakfasts, deepening our bonds and making memories that prepare us for a day of activities designed to nourish our minds, bodies, and spirits.

Before each retreat, the planning committee develops a new and captivating secular theme that enriches the event by focusing on various topics, from celebrating Nebraska’s unique local products to delving into the diverse cultures of the world. This innovative strategy not only builds a strong sense of community among participants but also expands their perspectives by inviting them to move beyond conventional religious conversations and engage through collective learning and discovery. During the retreat dedicated to Nebraska, I had the opportunity to discover the Runza, participate in sessions about local history and farming, and taste regionally brewed beers. In contrast, the retreat centered on world cultures exposed me to lively international music, art, cuisine, and storytelling, fostering a deeper appreciation for global diversity and enhancing my understanding of international issues. By weaving these secular themes into the retreat, the church creates a vibrant environment where spirituality meets cultural education, personal development, and meaningful fellowship, ensuring that each year’s event remains fresh, memorable, and welcoming to all.

To fully engage with the theme, we eagerly take part in numerous interactive workshops that not only put our abilities to the test but also enrich our understanding of the culture and traditions we are exploring. One year, we practiced cow roping, which taught us patience, accuracy, and the thrilling experience of mastering an age-old ranching skill. During another retreat, we had the opportunity to craft clay into exquisite pottery under the mentorship of one of our skilled members, Deborah. Last year’s retreat featured Omaha Street Percussion showcasing their hand-crafted percussion instruments. Following their performance, both children and adults were invited to try playing the instruments, enjoying the delight of creating distinctive rhythms. Each theme presents a distinctive chance to venture beyond our comfort zones, broaden our viewpoints, and forge enduring memories through active participation and shared moments.

During free time at the retreat, campers are offered a wonderful chance to connect with one another and immerse themselves in the peaceful beauty of nature at Platte River State Park. Surrounded by gently rolling hills and dense forests, the park provides an ideal backdrop for outdoor pursuits that refresh both mind and body. Whether hiking along picturesque trails, observing birds, or paddling on Jenny Newman Lake, these natural surroundings foster contemplation and camaraderie, away from the everyday rush. The crisp air and serene setting enhance our sense of community as we unite through shared adventures and the simple pleasure of experiencing God’s creation firsthand. Interacting with the park's nature not only encourages physical wellness but also deepens the spiritual bonds within our church family.

Each year, our community looks forward to a variety of thrilling annual activities during the retreat. A crowd favorite is the egg drop challenge, in which children design inventive devices to safeguard a fragile egg from a significant drop, leading to both laughter and impressive creativity. After preparing their contraptions, they ascend to the top of the Mallot Lodge tower to release their eggs. Adults gather on the deck below, cheering enthusiastically for the young inventors as their designs are put to the test. Another favorite pastime includes putting together massive puzzles while catching up on one another’s lives. Additionally, numerous energetic members embark on a revitalizing group hike to the Platte River, offering them a perfect opportunity to connect with nature and each other.

On Saturday evening, the lodge is filled with joy and music as we all come together for the eagerly awaited annual sing-along, a beloved event that unites everyone in cheerful harmony. The intimate setting, illuminated by the gentle light of a crackling fire, provides an ideal environment for an evening of shared singing, where well-known melodies and soulful ballads resonate beneath the wooden rafters. As voices merge and excitement builds, the mood effortlessly shifts into an energetic dance party, led by our spirited DJ, Grant. His skillfully chosen playlist, ranging from timeless classics to modern favorites, keeps the crowd moving well into the night. Grant’s music encourages all to unwind and revel in the lively communal spirit that characterizes our gathering.

After enjoying a hearty breakfast the following morning, we head back to our cabins to carefully pack our things and straighten up before returning to Mallot Lodge. Once everyone is assembled, we come together in a circle of friendly faces illuminated by the gentle morning sunlight streaming through the tall East-facing windows. Soon after, the church service commences—a peaceful, reflective experience that centers us and deepens our communal bonds. This harmonious mix of fellowship, spiritual refreshment, and the tranquil Sunday ambiance offers a perfect ending to a delightful weekend.

As the service concludes, a deep feeling of gratitude and rejuvenation fills the space. We share warm hugs and farewells before climbing into our cars for the journey home. Departing from Platte River State Park, our hearts are full, and our minds enriched—not only by the themes discussed and activities experienced but also by the strengthened connections we've built. Every retreat inspires us to adopt fresh viewpoints and to live with increased empathy and curiosity. Until we meet again next year, we carry these treasured memories like seeds, eager to cultivate them within our community and beyond.
