The Rituals of Recovery

During the tranquil early hours of the morning, I rest in bed, attuned to the gentle, familiar noises of my family moving around the house. Ericka's soft voice calls out reminders to the children as they get ready for their day. A soothing pattern emerges from the sound of their footsteps, the clatter of breakfast dishes, and occasional laughter or cheerful conversation echoing down the hallway. These ordinary daily sounds form a warm and serene atmosphere that grounds me before I rise to start my day at home following the implantation of my Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD). It is in these brief, tender instances between sleep and awakening that I feel a profound bond with my family, cherishing the simple yet meaningful rhythm of our shared life.

Once everyone has their backpack, they exit via the kitchen door and pile into the car. As the garage door shuts, it sends a tremor throughout the house, making our bedroom door quiver. This slight disruption signals me to shut my eyes once more and savor a few extra minutes of rest before starting my day. Occasionally, the calmness that follows the noise transforms into a soothing quiet that lulls me into a deeper sleep than anticipated.

Upon waking, my immediate focus is on Max and Cody, who eagerly anticipate my attention every morning. I begin by letting them out into the yard for a brief stretch and a bathroom break, then proceed to fill their bowls with fresh water and wholesome food to sustain their energy throughout the day. Their wagging tails and happy barks instantly lift my spirits, creating a cheerful start to the morning. While they happily eat, I prepare my own breakfast of cereal accompanied by a hot cup of coffee. Settling into my recliner, I turn on the news to stay updated with current events, fully engaging with the world’s latest developments as I enjoy my meal. This serene, purposeful routine feels like an ideal balance of care, responsibility, and relaxation to begin each day.

Following breakfast, I eagerly slip on my vivid red rubber boots, grab the automatic ball launcher, and head outside to the backyard with the dogs. The fresh morning air invigorates me as I get the launcher ready, knowing how excited Max and Cody are, their tails wagging energetically. As soon as the ball races across the yard, their joyful barks and swift dashes turn the backyard into an expansive playground. This daily activity not only provides essential exercise to keep my dogs healthy and happy but also grants me valuable moments of bonding and stress relief. The mix of crisp air, lively play, and the rhythmic sound of paws hitting the grass creates a revitalizing start to the day, eagerly anticipated by both my pets and me.

Back inside the warm comfort of the house, the dogs settle contentedly in their preferred sunny spots, their steady breathing and gentle sighs filling the room with tranquility. Meanwhile, I take my place at the craft table, surrounded by a colorful heap of Lego pieces waiting to be assembled. The sound of bricks snapping together sets the scene as I carefully follow instructions to construct detailed buildings, creating an imaginary city step by step. This peaceful ritual provides a calm refuge from the hustle of the outside world, where time slows down and the simple pleasure of constructing something with my hands offers profound satisfaction and tranquility.

After carefully building intricate Lego creations, I quickly have lunch before settling down for a much-needed nap. My body remains delicate and in recovery following LVAD surgery. Although assembling tiny bricks may appear to be a mundane hobby, it serves as a therapeutic outlet for me, stimulating both my creativity and mental focus while my heart steadily regains strength. The subsequent nap plays a vital role in my healing, offering a restorative break that replenishes the energy drained by surgery and convalescence. Each moment of rest gently reassures me that healing involves not only physical stamina but also the cultivation of patience and resilience. As I drift into sleep amid the colorful miniature worlds I have built, I welcome the tranquility, aware that every small advancement leads me closer to renewed health and vigor.

The warm afternoon sun shines softly through the south-facing window, bathing the room in a peaceful golden light. Sensing the gentle warmth on my skin, I decide to put on my tennis shoes for a brief walk outside, eager to stretch my legs and breathe in the fresh air after sitting for hours. The familiar ritual of tying my shoes swiftly transforms into quiet anticipation as I step into the lively world beyond my doorstep. Strolling along tree-lined streets, the subtle traffic hum and the delicate rustling of leaves in the breeze accompany me, reminding me how such simple experiences can rejuvenate both body and mind. Immersed in the afternoon sunlight, this unhurried walk grounds me in the present moment and fills me with profound peace and gratitude

While I’m unable to take my dogs for walks during my recovery, I make sure to let them out in the yard afterwards to play. This allows them to stretch their legs and expend energy, and I can keep an eye on them without overexerting myself. Activities like playing fetch, exploring the open air, or tossing a toy around provide both physical exercise and mental engagement, helping to keep their moods uplifted. Moreover, witnessing their happy tails wagging boosts my spirits during this healing time, reminding me that rest is crucial now, but plenty of walks will come once I’m fully healed.

At 3 o’clock sharp, the dogs and I jump into the car, their tails wagging excitedly as we drive to Lewis & Clark Middle School to pick up Josephine. The afternoon sunlight bathes the streets in a warm glow, and the familiar drive carries the promise of reunited laughter and shared stories from Josephine’s day. The dogs eagerly press their noses against the windows, eyes bright and ears alert, waiting for our arrival. Parking near the lively school entrance where children chatter and scatter, I see Josephine approaching along the sidewalk, her backpack slung over one shoulder and a radiant smile on her face. Though it’s a simple routine, these moments of jingling collars, lighthearted conversation in the car, and comfortable companionship transform an ordinary afternoon into a treasured part of my daily life.

Joannis soon walks up the driveway, so I pause to ask him about how his day went. Suppressing a yawn, he claims that nothing exciting ever takes place at South High School. After grabbing a quick snack, he retreats to his room to complete his homework before dinner. As the children settle into their bedrooms, heads bent over textbooks and iPads, diligently working on their assignments, I find comfort in the kitchen’s steady rhythm while preparing our meal. The sizzling sounds of meat on the grill mixes with the fragrant scents of herbs and spices cooking, creating a soothing soundtrack to my evening routine. While chopping vegetables and stirring pots, I eagerly anticipate Ericka’s return from work so that we can all gather around the kitchen table and exchange stories about our day.

Though my heart disease often leaves me feeling frustrated by its restrictions on daily activities, I have developed a deep appreciation for the unexpected gift of time off from work it has provided me. This break from the constant demands of my career has offered me the chance to slow down and reconnect with life in ways I might never have prioritized otherwise. Simple moments once overlooked—playing with my dogs, sharing family meals, engaging in lengthy conversations with friends, or even building Legos—now hold greater significance and warmth. While managing my health challenges remains difficult, this period of rest has illuminated the profound importance of presence and human connection, leaving me thankful not only for the love and support around me but also for the opportunity to nurture these relationships during such a crucial phase of my life.
